1 / 2 / 3
Book 2
Book 1
The images in Book 1 were made sometime in the mid 1990’s. The six photographs in a row were taken standing at a mirror with a 35mm camera mounted on a tripod. I don’t know of any other time I used a tripod — I hate working with a tripod. I don’t like being told I can’t move.
I made the single photograph in Book 2 the same day but without the irritating tripod.
The images in Book 3 were made in 2012, nearly 20 years later. Five images were made in afternoon light with a cell phone camera. The camera did a surprisingly good job of capturing detail — the wire rims and the reflections on my glasses and the lines on my no longer young face.
A couple of years before making 1/2/3 I had been looking at drawings I had done years earlier and never shown. That led to my making those drawings into a series of 17 Books. The new photographs, in turn, made me think to look for other, older photographs of myself which then led to 1/2/3. It seemed to be a moment to bring hidden work forward.
The three books are small, 6 x 8 inches, and when I show them I show them standing up. It was first seeing Book 2 standing open, a photograph flanked by white paper wings, that made me realize the sculptural possibilities of small books.
